An event taxonomy that survives the next release

How to name and govern app events so that product questions remain answerable as features evolve.

Notes from Connector ServiceHub’s app analytics practice.

Event tracking becomes expensive when names describe interface details instead of durable user intent. A useful taxonomy starts with the decisions a team needs to make, then identifies the smallest set of observable actions that can support those decisions.

Use verbs consistently, define required properties, and keep examples beside every definition. Assign an owner for changes and review additions before implementation. This small governance step prevents duplicate events and ambiguous fields from becoming permanent.

Finally, test the data in a real journey. Confirm ordering, identity, timestamps, and property values on development and production builds. Documentation is only trustworthy when observed data agrees with it.

A useful next step

Write down the product decision this analysis should inform, the behaviour that represents value, and one plausible competing explanation. Those three lines are often enough to improve the next conversation.
